The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge kicked off a full day of events in Canada’s birthplace Monday morning.

Prince William and Kate Middleton toured Province House in Charlottetown, PEI.

Kate wore a nautical-inspired, cream knit dress by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen – the same designer who designed her wedding dress.

William wore his traditional blue suit with a burgundy tie.

The dress

Kate’s first dress of the day featured a necktie reminiscent of a naval neckerchief, complete with an anchor and navy trim. It also featured navy stripe detailing encircling the sleeves and waistband, as well as the flared hemline of the skirt.

The designer

Sarah Burton made international headlines for designing the wedding gown Kate wore down the aisle during her fairytale wedding to William in April.

After graduating from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, England, Burton joined the Alexander McQueen fashion house, first as an intern in 1996, then as McQueen’s personal assistant.

In 2000, Burton was appointed head of womenswear. She was named creative director of the fashion house following McQueen’s death in February 2010.

In September 2011, Burton showed her first complete collection as creative director during Paris Fashion Week.
