UPDATED: Man dead in early morning crash

A 19 year old man is dead and two others were injured in a crash in west Edmonton Sunday.

"Just after 1:55 this morning we got a report from neighborhood residents here of a single vehicle crash where a Mercedes had hit a parked vehicle,” Staff Sgt. Erik Johnson told Global News at the scene at 153 Street and 76 Avenue, “And upon police arriving at the scene we had one male deceased at the scene and two injured were transported to hospital.”

The victim was in the front passenger seat. Police are still determining if he was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver and a second passenger who was sitting in the back seat suffered minor injuries.

Police believe the trio was returning from a bar, but they're still not sure if alcohol was a factor in the crash.

They're also still investigating whether or not speed and poor road conditions played a role.

"When I first came out to the scene early this morning the road was wet,” says Johnson, “I wouldn't say there was any ice involved but definitely road conditions weren't ideal.”

Peter Cox, a resident who lives on 76th Avenue right in front of the area where the crash happened, says he's had concerns in the past over vehicles speeding down the street.

"I remember one fall when school started up I did ask the police to come and setup a radar trap. You don't like to be a bad neighbor but it seemed to me, sooner or later, some kid crossing the street, going to school was going to get hammered because of this speeding.”

Although police are still looking at all the factors that caused this crash.. They're reminding all edmonton motorists to follow the rules of the road. Especially at this time of the year

"Yeah, this time of the year is particularly bad for vehicles,” says Johnson, “A lot of people are taking their motorcycles out. They're taking their cars that they store over the winter out, and they're pushing them to their limits a little bit."
