One person is dead and another is in critical condition after they were hit by a truck in west Edmonton.

Just before 2:30 Thursday afternoon, a man and a woman were crossing Stony Plain Road at 216 Street from the south to the north.

They were hit by an eastbound transport truck killing the woman and critically injuring the man.

Sergeant Gary Lamont from Edmonton Police Services says the driver of the truck blew his horn and tried to steer away from the pair to avoid hitting them but was unsuccessful.

"The driver was absolutely sober, speed was not an issue, he was doing everything he was supposed to be doing," Lamont says adding, "It seems, at this time, there are indications that the pedestrians were intoxicated."

There was no crosswalk at the intersection and that segment of Stony Plain Road is a 100 km/h zone.

The eastbound lanes of Stony Plain Road were closed well past the supper hour as police investigated, while westbound lanes remained open.

Lamont says a 42 year old female died on scene and a male was transported to the Royal Alexandra Hospital with critical injuries.

Their names are not being released at this time as the investigation continues.
