Friends gather to remember man killed in crash on Anthony Henday

A vigil was held Friday night, for a young man killed in a crash on Anthony Henday Drive.

The procession began at the Tim Hortons on Whyte Avenue. From there, people drove to the site of the Thursday's deadly crash where a vigil was held.

A member of the 780 Tuners, a local car club, 22-year-old Mathew was a car enthusiast.

Friends say Mathew, whose family has asked his last name not be made public, was a great young man and considered a friend by all.

"Matt was just a super good guy," said his friend Tony Koch adding, "Never, never down on himself. He was just always in good spirits."

"(He was) always willing to help people out. He was the first guy to get in and give somebody a hand when they needed it," said Matt's friend Joe Lapitsky.

Friends placed a cross and a wreath, as well a flowers, at the site of crash. They held candles and shared stories about Matt.

"A lot of us know his family, know his brother and it's really nice to get everybody together and think about what this time means to us and what a great guy Matt was," said Lapitsky.

Mathew was killed Thursday morning, after his small car collided with a grader on Anthony Henday East, near 91st Street.

While friends don't know the nature of Mathew's accident, they say they wanted to use this vigil to also raise awareness for the dangers of distracted driving.

"Obviously distracted driving is a problem in this city," said friend and vigil organizer Mathew Spendelow adding, "It's creating quite a problem and obviously people are losing their lives over it and something needs to change."

Mathew was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Weather is not believed to be a factor in the collision.
