The Edmonton Police Service and the City of Edmonton Transportation Department are cancelling the distribution and prosecution of speeding tickets from Intersection Safety Cameras (ISC).
The speed on green tickets are issued when a vehicle exceeds the speed limit in an intersection where a properly equipped red light camera is located.
There were 245,000 speeding violations detected these intersections in Edmonton in 2010. According to a news release, 26 of the violations could not be verified. Most of those violations did not pass a quality control screening process, but one of the tickets was accidentally mailed out.
Drivers who are now in posession of a speeding ticket issued by a red light camera, or a combination of a speeding and red light ticket are being asked not to pay the ticket.
Drivers who have been issued a ticket for a red light infraction only, or a photo radar ticket issued outside of an intersection are still responsible for paying those tickets.
A review process is now on to address the unverified readings issue. The speed measurement function on all Intersection Safety Cameras is being tested. Additionally, the review process before a ticket is mailed out is also being re-examined to determine how the ticket got sent out. Each ticket is supposed to undergo five steps before it is sent.
The Crown Prosecutors office will be investigating the tickets that have already been paid, and making a decision about what to do with them later next week.
If you need more information about which tickets are in question, visit the City of Edmonton website or the Edmonton Police Service website.
