Grace period for 'speed on green' tickets over

Drivers who speed through intersections with a red light camera will now pay a hefty penalty.

Starting Wednesday, Edmontonians who speed through intersections equipped with red light cameras will receive a speeding ticket. The tickets come after a two month grace period. During that time, drivers who were caught speeding through an intersection equipped with the cameras received a warning by mail. Over 1000 warnings were reportedly handed out.

Drivers can receive a ticket for speeding through the intersection regardless of the colour of the light. The price of the ticket varies by what the posted speed limit is, and how much over the limit the driver is travelling. If a driver is caught speeding through a red light, they will be slapped with a ticket for both speeding and running a red light.

there should be countdown clocks because its difficult to judge when the lights are going to change. slamming on the breaks will not be safe in some cases.

Unless your going to make yellow lights longer or install countdown clocks on all these intersections, this is nothing more than a money grab trap! There are many situations when you just have no choice but to pin it through the intersection or risk one of these red light tickets cause there is not sufficient warning of the light change. Also many other factors could be involved. Its nothing but a trap. Many good law abiding citizens will fall prey to this one. Hopefully the ones that think it's such a great idea! Whoever made the decision to install the cameras should be ashamed of themselves.
