Day 1 of Royal Visit: What Kate Middleton wore today
From the moment the royal newlyweds left London's Heathrow Airport Thursday morning to the minute they arrived in Ottawa, all eyes—and cameras—were on Kate. On Day One of the Canadian Royal Visit, we take a brief look at how Kate Middleton saluted Canada:
The dress:
Kate boarded the plane to Ottawa in a knee-length Manon dress by French designer Roland Mouret but matched her outfit with a navy blazer by Toronto-based design duo, Smythe les Vestes. The blazer, which is sold exclusively in Canada at Holt Renfrew, goes for a 'mere' $550 and has instantaneously become the most sought-after jacket.
After arriving in Canada, the Duchess of Cambridge changed into a form-fitting knee-length dress. The black floral lace outfit—with elbow-length sleeves—also includes a Canadian touch. The pre-spring 2012 collection item was designed by Montreal-born Erdem Moralioglu.
The shoes/ handbag:
Sex and the City fans rejoiced as Kate departed for Canada in a dark pair of Manolo Blahnik heels and a new-season Mulberry handbag.
Upon her arrival in Ottawa, Kate swapped her shoes and purse for a pair of nude patent platform pumps and a matching clutch bag.
The hair:
The Duchess of Cambridge kept her hair loose in simple waves as she boarded the plane but arrived in Canada with her tresses styled into a demi-chignon.
Hit or miss?
“Personally, Kate is playing it a little safe so far,” says ET Canada fashion producer, Angie Smith. “I was hoping to see a little more colour - some red and white - nothing cheesy but she's really giving us a demonstration of how she's slipped on her royal shoes.”
Smith says Kate’s wardrobe is quite the departure from her jeans and t-shirts pre-wedding. “I think she'll continue to wear polished, classy looks,” says Smith. “Perhaps at night we'll see some off-duty looks or for Canada Day we'll see those red J-Brand jeans she was spotted buying during a recent shopping trip.”
