EDMONTON - A 16-year-old boy faces charges of murder and attempted murder after a 31-year-old woman was found dead in a Fort McMurray apartment building in late November.

Police could not confirm if the victim and the accused were known to each other.

The body of the woman was found Nov. 26 in an apartment building in Fort McMurray’s Eagle Ridge neighbourhood.

Police were led to her residence after they found an abandoned silver Dodge Avenger that had collided with parked cars and traced the vehicle back to the address.

An injured child was also found in the home and was airlifted to an Edmonton-area hospital.

Police say the child has been released from hospital and is with family members.

RCMP could not confirm if the 16-year-old boy is facing a first- or second-degree murder charge. The teen was also charged with other offences in relation to the homicide, including break-and-enter with intent to commit an indictable offence, improperly interfering with human remains, aggravated assault and theft of a motor vehicle.

The teen was arrested on Dec. 10 after police responded to a report of a break-and-enter at a residence in Fort McMurray’s Timberlea neighbourhood.

He was charged with a number of offences in relation to that incident, including break-and-enter with the intent to commit sexual assault, and sexual interference.

The accused was released on bail on Dec. 13 on a number of conditions.

Police arrested the teen again on Dec. 15 and charged him with murder and other offences related to the November homicide. He remains in custody.

Police refused to release the name of the homicide victim or the cause of death.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The boy is set to appear Dec. 20 in court in Fort McMurray on charges stemming from both the homicide and break-and-enter investigations.
