Suspect arrested in murder of woman after apartment fight

A fight in an apartment building near downtown ended with one woman dead and a police investigation.

A 911 call came in around 2:45 Thursday morning to the Wimbledon Apartments on 113 Street and 101 Avenue.

An autopsy confirmed the woman, who was in her twenties, died from a stab wound.

“I thought it was just another fight...there's quite a few fights in the alley - just people who have had too much to drink,” says Amanda Hart-Dowhun who lives a few floors down from where it happened. “So that's what I thought originally. It wasn't until my partner called me this morning that I realized that it was from inside the building."

Police have arrested a man in connection with the death but charges have not been laid.

Residents say the incident is unusual for the building and see it as a safe place to live.

“Everyone I've met in the building is really nice, really friendly,” says Hart-Dowhun, “I don't know, I've never felt unsafe in there, I can't imagine that would change because of one incident. "

"This building is really safe,” adds another resident Trina Low, “I've always felt comfortable being here."

Police say the victim and suspect are known to each other and that alcohol likely played a role.
