EDMONTON - A 41-year-old man, who was assaulted more than three weeks ago, died in hospital on the weekend, making him Edmonton's second homicide victim of the year.

On Thursday January 3rd, just after 11 p.m., officers responded to a reported stabbing at 117 Avenue and 127 Street. Jeffery Thomas, then 40, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Witnesses said Thomas had been in an argument with another man at the home before the stabbing occurred.

The suspect, Russell Thomas, 35, was stopped by a patrol vehicle several blocks from the scene. He was charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon on Friday, Janurary 4th.

EPS Homicide Section detectives are in the process of upgrading the charges against the 35 year-old to second degree murder since the victim's death.

The autopsy was completed on Monday afternoon, with injuries from the stabbing determined to be the cause of death. This is the second homicide in Edmonton for 2013.

Police say the two men were known to each other, and that the assault is not believed to be random.

Russell Thomas made his first court appearance and has been remanded into custody.
