It's nearly time for fall term to begin at Grant MacEwan University. On Sunday, there was evidence of that as hundreds of students moved boxes and bags of belongings into their new home in MacEwan Residence.
"We're moving well over 700 individuals into residence today. This is new for us, we've always done it over two days," says Cathryn Heslep, the Vice President of Student Services.
In previous years, they would have half of the students move in on Sunday and the rest on Monday. However, school officials decided to have all the students move in on one day this year, because many people preferred to come in on the weekend.
Heslep says it also gives students plenty of time to get familiar with the campus and surrounding areas, as many students are new to Edmonton.
"We have a whole week planned of orientation activities so that they're oriented not only to the University, but oriented to the city."
Moving day started around 7:30am and wrapped up around 8pm. Heslep says the entire process ran smoothly.
These are exciting times for Grant MacEwan. The University is in the process of consolidating all four of its campuses into the downtown location. School officials are also currently designing a new centre for performing arts at the downtown site.
