Massive blaze in northeast Edmonton

EDMONTON - Thick black smoke could be seen billowing out of a northeast Edmonton industrial building as flames ripped through its interior Friday afternoon.

The blaze broke out at Park Derochie Coating, located at 118 Ave and 28 Street NE, just after 4:30 p.m.

Our Global 1 News helicopter flew over the scene shortly after, where at least eight Edmonton fire crews were already fighting the flames. It took firefighters about half and hour to get the blaze under control.

Crews were worried about some propane tanks and flammable materials that were in a shed east of the building, but they were able to keep the flames away from there.

Several area roads were closed down, adding to traffic buildup for east and westbound traffic on the Yellowhead.

No one was inside the building when the fire broke out.

There's still no word on what sparked the blaze.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.
