WCB hostage taking anniversary
Hundreds of staff members at the Workers Compensation Board are marking a horrific anniversary. It was one year ago today when a gunman entered the WCB building, fired a shot in the lobby and took nine people hostage.
At least 700 people fled the building and for the rest of the day a standoff between police and the gunman took place. Nine hours later the hostages were released unharmed.
The WCB says since that event, changes have been made and employees have been getting the help they need.
"They have to check in when they come into the building and people's passcards are checked." Jennifer Dagsvik of the WCB said on Thursday. "I think that's the most major thing people would see visually. Other than that a lot of the changes are internal changes that are going on."
"Any time there is an incident we debrief and see what can we learn from that particular incident." Thomas Lukaszuk, Minister for Employment and Immigration said. "The WCB has done exactly that, they analyzed this incident with security experts and the Edmonton Police Service, and they have modified some of their security features."
Patrick Clayton has been charged and is scheduled to go to trail in January.
