A 24 year old woman and 32 year-old man are dead after being struck by a car in northeastern Alberta early Saturday morning.
RCMP received a report just after 1 am on Saturday that the two had been hit on Highway 55, west of Cold Lake.
The pair, whom police have not identified but say were boyfriend and girlfriend, had been outside their vehicle after stopping at the side of the road due to an unrelated collision. An off-duty EMS worker who came across the scene was giving help when the fatal crash occurred.
The EMS worker wasn't hurt.
The driver of the vehicle that hit the couple fled the scene without stopping. On Saturday evening, he turned himself in to Cold Lake RCMP, who continue to investigate the incident.
This marks the 9th fatal collision on Alberta highways in just 8 days. The crashes have left 17 people dead, including 7 who were killed in a head-on crash on highway 63:
