Alcohol and speed factors in fatal collision

EDMONTON - A man in his late 20s is dead after an early-morning car crash in west Edmonton.

Police say alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

The man has not been identified, as police are still notifying his next of kin.

Edmonton Police Service Sgt. Brad Manz said the man was speeding north on 142nd Street when he lost control of the car and hit a street pole just south of 118th Avenue, across from the Nexus Business Park.

The collision wrapped the white Pontiac around the pole at the driver’s side door, with the pole intruding about two feet into the vehicle.

The man was pronounced dead in hospital. No one else was in the car at the time of the crash.

The block around where the collision occurred remained blocked off by police on Sunday morning, while members of the EPS collision investigation unit continued to work at the scene.

Manz said it is discouraging that people continue to drink and drive.

He said 11 impaired drivers were apprehended and 11 suspended during a checkstop on Thursday.

“I just don’t understand why people of this city can’t get the message,” he said, speaking to the media at the crash site. “This is a prime example of what alcohol does when you’re driving a motor vehicle.”

He said the vehicle was going so fast before the crash that a witness heard it approaching from down the street.
