Some Edmonton residents may be living in homes that never received a final inspection.

Global news has learned that thousands of homes built during the boom were never checked over by city officials.

The city is now in the process of contacting those homeowners between 4,000 and 5,000 homes, most in the southeast or the southwest portions of the city.

City inspectors are going door to door to notify residents, and will leave a notice if residents aren't home.

According to the city, its the fallout of the last boom in Edmonton when houses were rapidly built and the city didn't have enough inspectors to give them a final check.

Because the houses framing, foundation, plumbing and electrical would typically be inspected before a final inspection - the city's chief building inspector says homeowners shouldn't be overly concerned.

One way you can check to see if your home has had a final inspection is by going to the electrical panel in your basement and looking for a sticker that will show the home has passed a final building inspection.

The city says some of the homes in question may have been inspected, but they just doesn't have it on record.
