Refund to be issued for speed on green tickets
Alberta Justice is cancelling 'speed on green' tickets issued in Edmonton between November 2009 and including January 14, 2011. Motorists who have already payed a ticket issued during that period will be refunded.
The tickets have been declared unvalid because of concerns about the reliability of intersection safety cameras.
“This is the right action to take,” Alison Redford, Minister of Justice and Attorney General said in a written news release. “Our first concern is the fair administration of justice, and we cannot proceed with legal action when there is doubt about the accuracy of the city’s Speed-on-Green ticket technology.”
The ticket cancellation does not apply to red light camera only infractions, or speeding tickets issued by photo radar. Drivers who may have received those kinds of tickets are still responsible for paying their fines.
The province says that approximately 102,700 speed on green tickets that were issued in Edmonton were paid between November 2009 and January 14, 2011.
Alberta Justice is currently working with the City of Edmonton to establish how and when the refunds will be issued.
