Edmonton police have now confirmed that the closure of the Groat Bridge on Monday afternoon was due to a pipe bomb.
Officers received a call from a passer-by at 10:30 am about a suspicious package. The tactical unit was dispatched, and they closed off the area around the bridge.
The bomb was discovered on the side of the road near a concrete median.
The bomb was detonated without incident just after 1:00 Monday afternoon.
Investigators searched the area around the bridge, and no other devices were found.
Groat Bridge has now re-opened to traffic. The bridge closure resulted in a traffic nightmare over the noon hour.
Police are reminding Edmontonians to always give police a call if you see something suspicious.
