Sherman calls PC and Wildrose 'thugs and bigots'

Liberal leader Raj Sherman says “it is time for Albertans to say enough is enough” when it comes to intolerant remarks made by Progressive Conservatives and Wildrose candidates.

He says “a choice between thugs and bigots is no choice at all,” referring to the PC and Wildrose, respectively.

“We have had members of a political party that wants to govern make homophobic comments, sexist comments, bigoted and racist comments.”

Sherman took personal offence to racist comments made by Wildrose candidate Ron Leech on a Calgary radio station last weekend.

Sherman is now calling on both Alison Redford and Danielle Smith to apologize for remarks Sherman feels are inappropriate in Alberta. “Failure to condemn racism, sexism, and homophobia is condoning it.”

He lumps the Wildrose and PC together in the same pool, saying “What Albertans need to realize is that the PCs and Wildrose are really just one right-wing party going through a nasty divorce.”

Sherman added that strategic voting in support of the PC’s is not the answer. He presented the Liberals as a better alternative.

Speaking to media at McKay Avenue School in Edmonton Thursday morning, Sherman went on to talk about how the Liberal party is different, more respectful and tolerant of all Albertans. “It doesn’t matter where you’re from, who you are or what you look like, we will welcome you with open arms.”

He also took a page out of Martin Luther King’s speech, saying “I have a dream; I have a hope for this province.”

Sherman proceeded to hammer home his platform on universal education – “If you want to study, we should give you a chance to study, and make it affordable and accessible.”

As advanced polling began this morning, Sherman once again reached out to seniors. “You’ve worked hard your whole life and you’ve built this great province. Rest assured. We will be there for you until your last day.”

He concluded by saying “This nasty election can still provide a positive outcome. I am still hopeful and optimistic for the people of Alberta.”
