It's been three years of traffic tie-ups and construction around one of south Edmonton's most busy intersections, but by the end of September the 23 Avenue interchange will be open to traffic.
The westbound bridge of the interchange has been open for some time, and on September 5 the eastbound bridge will open to traffic. This means the bridge that is currently open as a two-way road will only be used for westbound traffic, and traffic moving eastbound will be routed to the new bridge. As a result, traffic will be able to move on and off 23 Avenue to and from the north and the south.
Later that month, the City will open the 19 Avenue overpass. This means the traffic lights on 19 Avenue and Gateway Boulevard will be removed, and motorists will be able to access 19 Avenue from 23 Avenue to Calgary Trail - and traffic that would access Gateway Boulevard from 19 Avenue will be redirected to the 23 Avenue overpass.
The $260 million project is on time and on budget, however work on the finishing touches will continue into 2011. This includes landscaping and the temporary closure of Gateway Boulevard and Calgary Trail to pave and upgrade both roads.
