Betty Fox, the mother of Canadian icon Terry Fox, died Friday morning.

Her family released a statement saying Betty passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loved ones.

The Terry Fox Foundation confirmed three weeks ago that Betty was terminally ill, although reports that she was suffering from cancer were incorrect.

"She was absolutely an inspiration to so many of us around the world," said Lee Elliott of the Alberta Cancer Foundation. "We will be looking back for generations and crediting her and the entire Fox family with what they've been able to achieve."

Betty Fox carried on her son's cancer-fighting legacy by organizing runs, fundraising and playing a key role in opening a foundation and research institute. Despite her passing, those involved in the cause expect her legacy will live on, just as her son's did.

"She empowered millions of people to take up this cause," Elliott said. "The family has shown us that something can be done about cancer, and I think that across Canada and around the world there are organizations and events and millions of people who are gathering together for this common cause because they showed us how to do it."

Statement on behalf of the Family of Mrs. Betty Fox, Mother of Terry Fox:

"It is with considerable sadness that we share that our wife, mother and grandmother died at 8:25am (PT) this morning. Betty/Mom passed away peacefully surrounded by love. Betty was comfortable the last few weeks and months of her life, was always full of wit and rarely alone. Betty is now with Terry and joins other dear family members that predeceased her. We have greatly appreciated the privacy granted to our family since Betty's illness was shared and are hoping it continues at this difficult time."
