SLAVE LAKE, Alta. - An amazing moment.

That's how the mayor of Slave Lake, Alberta, described the time she spent with Prince William and Kate during the couple's visit of the part of the town that was destroyed by wildfires.

Mayor Karina Pillay-Kinnee says she spent most of the tour talking to Catherine.

The mayor says the duchess was interested in the rebuild and how are people going to start building their homes and where are families now.

Pillay-Kinnee says the royal couple's visit boosted the morale of the community and inspired people.

Will and Kate also met with residents, firefighters and rescue crews, and did a short walkabout.

The northern Alberta town was not on the official royal itinerary.

But the couple wanted to make the detour in their Canadian visit to show support for the many people who lost everything.

More than 400 homes and businesses were reduced to ash and debris when a wind-whipped forest fire swept through the town in May.

They have left the town for some private time at an undisclosed location before their next official stop in Calgary late Thursday afternoon.
