3 year-old Alberta girl dies after falling through ice with sister

Global News has learned one of two young sisters found submerged in a central Alberta pond has died.

The girls, aged five and three, were playing on a rural property west of Red Deer Friday morning. A family member then found them unconscious in the water.

Emergency crews suspect they fell through the ice. It's unknown how long they were submerged for.

The two were air-lifted in critical life-threatening condition to an Edmonton hospital, where the younger sister later succombed to her injuries.

Police are calling it a tragic accident and say no charges are pending.

Penhold mayor Dennis Cooper said the community’s thoughts and prayers are with the family that lives nearby and is now in Edmonton.

“After the accident happened, we were all re-reminding ourselves about the dangers of thin ice and the spring thaw,” said Cooper.
