UPDATED: One man killed after two tankers crash on Highway 16

Strathcona RCMP were called to Highway 16 east of Sherwood Park following a fatal collision between two tankers Sunday afternoon. A double tanker had been travelling southbound on secondary Highway 830, when it turned west onto Highway 16 and was rear-ended by a westbound single tanker transport truck.

The single tanker ended up in the median, where it caught fire and was destroyed.

A passing motorist, along with the driver of the double tanker who was not injured in the crash, rushed to try and free the driver from the wreckage. They were unsuccessful because of the fire, though, and the driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His identity or age is not known at this time.

Motorists are advised to avoid this area as Highway 16 is closed to both east and westbound traffic between Range Road 220 and Secondary Highway 830.
