UPDATE: Case of man accused in HUB Mall shootings put over

Travis Baumgartner, man accused in HUB mall shooting

The case of Travis Baumgartner, the man accused in the HUB mall shootings at the University of Alberta, has been put over until October 26.

Background:

EDMONTON - The trainee security guard accused of killing three of his co-workers and seriously injuring a fourth during a robbery on the University of Alberta campus is scheduled to return to court Friday.

Travis Baumgartner, 21, is charged with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of attempted murder and four counts of robbery with a firearm for the incident June 15 at HUB Mall. He has not yet entered a plea.

Last month, Baumgartner’s mother was removed from a list of people he is banned from contacting, though his father remains under a no-contact order.

The no-contact list was amended by Edmonton’s chief Crown prosecutor Steven Bilodeau in a Court of Queen’s Bench courtroom. The list contains potential witnesses, family members and any employee of G4S Cash Solutions Canada, which used to employ Baumgartner. No reasons were given for why the list was changed.

Michelle Shegelski, 26, Brian Ilesic, 35, and Eddie Rejano, 39, were shot to death while delivering cash to bank machines. A fourth guard, Matthew Schuman, is recovering from his injuries.

In August, the Crown decided to proceed with a direct indictment, meaning Baumgartner’s case now goes directly to trial. There will be no preliminary hearing held to determine if the Crown has enough evidence to proceed, and the case has now moved from the provincial court system directly to Court of Queen’s Bench.

A trial date has not been set.
