The Royal Visit last summer helped inspire some parents when it came to naming their new babies, but the many of the same names remain the most popular.
The province released the list of baby names and along with popular names like Olivia and Liam there are some one of a kind names, like Dreamz, Stylez, J-Cub and Tuff.
There were more than 50,000 babies born in Alberta in 2011 and The Vital Statistics branch of Service Alberta recorded nearly 5,700 distinct boy names and just shy of 7,000 unique girl names, including two girls named Unique.
The Royal visit prompted 8 boys named Prince and 6 girls named Princess. There was also a Princewill. There was even a Pippa.
Both William and Kate made a resurgence in 2011 as William rose to 9th place and Kate moved up 15 spots to 64th on the list.
As for the most popular names Liam ranks number one again on the boys’ side, followed by Ethan, Mason, Lucas and Jacob.
For girls’ names, Olivia moved to the top of the list. Olivia was second in 2010 behind Emma. Emma this year came third, behind Sophia in 2nd place. Emily and Ava finish off the top five.
