Thunderstorm swamps portions of Edmonton’s Parkallen, as well as Devon

EDMONTON - Much of the Edmonton region was pounded with rain early today when a thunderstorm rolled through around 3 a.m.
There are reports of flooded basements and waterlogged vehicles in the Parkallen neighbourhood, where storm sewers could not keep up with the intensity of the rainfall.
There were also concerns water was pooling near the 111th Street underpass on Whitemud Drive, where flooding created problems following last Thursday’s storm, but city crews were on scene and the freeway remains open this morning. The eastbound portion of Highway 16 between Stony Plain and Spruce Grove that had been closed earlier this week because of previous storms also remains open.
The worst damage appears to have been southwest of the city in Devon, where residents reported more than a foot of water on the road. In Edmonton, rainfall varied from 15-30 mm on the south side to a mere 2-5 cm on the north.
