Teen dies in collision in Strathcona County

A 17-year-old male is dead following a two vehicle collision in Strathcona County.

The accident happened around 1:30 Saturday afternoon, at the intersection of Liberty Drive and Range Road 232, just north of Highway 16.

RCMP say the driver of a BMW sedan was travelling east on Liberty Drive when he approached the intersection.

"For whatever reason, we don't know at this point, he entered the intersection when it was unsafe and was broadsided, or t-boned, by a tandem dump truck that had been traveling northbound on Range Road 232," explained Constable Wally Henry, Strathcona County RCMP.

RCMP say the male passenger, from Wetaskiwin, was pronounced dead on the scene. The driver of the car, a 21-year-old male from Beaumont, was taken to an Edmonton hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the dump truck, a 65-year-old male from Strathcona County, was taken to hospital with serious but, non-life threatening injuries.

Constable Henry says the area where the collision occurred is a quiet, industrial area and the only vehicles in the area at the time were the ones involved in the crash. A collision analyst was on scene, trying to determine the cause.

"We're going to try to back track here and see what happened and what led up to the collision. There is a stop sign that controls this intersection. We don't know if the vehicle stopped and then proceeded or went right through the intersection," said Constable Henry.

Henry says alcohol does not appear to be a factor.

The victim's name has not been released.
