EDMONTON - Homicide detectives are investigating a suspicious death after a 25-year-old was beaten outside of a southeast Edmonton apartment building Sunday morning.

The man was found near 95 Avenue and 87 Street at the Strathearn Heights Apartments complex at 4 a.m., Det. Paul Gregory said.

The man died in hospital later Sunday. His death is considered suspicious, but has not been declared a homicide.

Dried blood could be seen on the sidewalk in front of the three-storey walk-up Sunday afternoon. A police officer was posted at the door of a basement-level suite.

Neighbours said a quiet man lived alone in the suite.

Tenant Allen Ronaghan, who lives above the police-guarded apartment, said he was awoken by a commotion outside early Sunday morning.

“At 5 o’clock I heard voices and I lay here for a moment listening and wondering what it was and I came to the window and I could see about four men standing by a tree talking. There was a big vehicle here, I thought it was a fire truck, but down the street there was what I thought was an ambulance.”

A little over an hour later, a police officers were knocking on doors in the building to gather details.

Police are interviewing several people, but have released no information on a suspect.

“It is still very early in the investigation,” Gregory said.

An autopsy is expected to be performed on Tuesday to determine a cause of death.
