One pedestrian killed in crash on Calgary Trail

One person is dead and another seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle in South Edmonton.

Just before noon Wednesday, two pedestrians were hit while crossing the street at 49 Avenue and Calgary Trail.

Police say an older adult male pedestrian died after being struck by a vehicle. An older adult female pedestrian has been taken to hospital by EMS in critical condition.

The intersection is in a very busy part of South Edmonton, and many people saw the crash first-hand.

"All I saw... was that he went flying back... two metres," explains Tasha Varkey, who witnessed the crash. "He just hit the ground... and he started to bleed."

"I don't know what they were doing. They might have been trying to cross."

Those at the scene believe the two victims did not cross at the lights.

Late Wednesday, police confirmed the pedestrians were not in a marked crosswalk when attempting to cross Calgary Trail.

"They were trying to get across the street here, and they just weren't making it fast enough," adds another witness Brad Thompson.

"I don't think they saw the car coming, obviously. They went up and hit the windshield, hit the windshield pretty hard, and by the time they came down and hit the ground... I think they ... unfortunately passed away."

The collision involved one vehicle travelling south on Calgary Trail. It was driven by a man in his 80s, who was not injured in the crash. However, those on scene say he was very shaken up.

The the road closure at 51 Avenue and 48 Avenue, on Calgary Trail, was reopened to traffic around 4:20 pm.

Traffic Section continues to investigate. No charges have been laid at this time.

Investigators are asking anyone who witnessed the collision to call police on the non-emergency complaint line, 780-423-4567.

This is Edmonton's 19th traffic fatality and the seventh pedestrian fatality.
