EDMONTON- One man is in hospital following an overnight stabbing in the McDougall neighbourhood.
Police were called to a house party at an apartment building located at 106th Avenue and 103rd Street just after 3:00a.m. Sunday.
"In the course of that house party a fight ensued. The fight escalated to a stabbing," explained Acting Inspector Malcolm Allen with the Edmonton Police Service.
Officers arrived and found a man in his mid-twenties suffering from serious stab wounds.
"The most serious of which being two stab wounds to the neck, (and) multiple stab wounds to the upper body," said Allen.
The man was rushed to the Royal Alexandra Hospital where officers say he underwent surgery. He remains in hospital Sunday afternoon in serious, but stable condition.
Police also sanctioned off a second apartment building located at 104th Street. Officers say they followed a trail of blood from first apartment through the alley to the second apartment building, where blood was found on a door handle.
Allen says a number of people have been taken in to police headquarters for questioning, some of whom may be potential suspects.
"There are three individuals who we believe to be responsible, to one degree or another, for this assault and we're just in the process of trying to identify who they are."
The EPS K-9 Unit was called in to help search for a weapon. Allen says because officers believe more than one person was involved in the stabbing, they're trying to determine if there was more than one weapon used.
"We have recovered a weapon, and again, all part of the investigation is to determine if that is the weapon or the only weapon that was used."
Allen calls the area a "neighbourhood in transition." He says there is often a high police presence in the area.
In an attempt to clean up the building, residents of the apartment where the stabbing took place are being evicted on February 15. Eviction notices were served before Sunday's incident.
