Michael Briscoe has been found guilty of first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping in the death of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte in 2005.

He was also found not guilty in the death of sex-trade worker Ellie May Meyer.

Briscoe, 41, was facing charges of first-degree murder, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping in the death of the 13-year-old Courtepatte.

On April 3, 2005, the teen was lured from West Edmonton Mall by a small group who promised her they were going to a rave. Instead, they took her to a golf course, where she was twice raped, then beaten to death. Her body was left on a fairway and found the next day.

At his trial, Briscoe admitted he had driven the car to the golf course, but denied any knowledge that the four people with him planned to kill the girl.
Briscoe said he never harmed Courtepatte and was afraid for his own life that night.

Other witnesses testified that violence was previously discussed in front of Briscoe and he helped choose the tools that Courtepatte was assaulted with.
Four young people in the car with Briscoe and Courtepatte that night are already serving prison sentences for their roles her death.

At the same trial, Briscoe faced a charge of first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old sex-trade worker Ellie May Meyer.

She was killed on April 1, 2005, two days before Courtepatte. Meyer’s beaten body was found several weeks later in a field northeast of Edmonton.

Briscoe’s ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Bird, testified at Briscoe’s trial that he and Joseph Laboucan attacked Meyer after they had picked her up in Edmonton and drove her out of the city. However, defence lawyer Charles Davison argued that Bird is unreliable and had merely pieced together details that police had given her during interviews.

Bird was never charged in Meyer’s death, but was found guilty of murder in Courtepatte’s.

Laboucan has been found guilty of murder in both cases.

Briscoe was previously found not guilty of murder in Courtepatte’s death, though a new trial was ordered on appeal. It is the first time Briscoe has faced a trial in connection with Meyer’s death.
