EDMONTON - One person died Thursday after being struck by a train near Spruce Grove, a spokeswoman for CN Railway says.

The person was trespassing on the railway lines just after noon when they were struck, said CN spokeswoman Emily Hamer, who added that workers couldn’t do anything to stop the collision. It didn’t happen at a crossing or in a rail yard, Hamer said.

An RCMP spokeswoman said the incident happened on tracks near Century Road, on the southeastern boundary of the city. Spruce Grove RCMP confirm the person struck and killed was a man, who was likely between 18 and 25 years old. He did not have identification on him, so police are still trying to determine his identity and contact his family.

CN adds the crew is quite shaken up, and that workers are warning people to always stay off train tracks.

Police and CN personnel continue to investigate.
