Edmonton police closed off the area of 106th street and 40th avenue after a gas leak just after 7:00 on Wednesday evening.

Fire crews reportedly evacuated some residents from the area after arriving on scene.

Residents in the area reported that the sound of gas leaking could be heard, and a visible plume of gas could be seen spewing into the sky.

Cassie Peake lives and goes to school in the area.

"I heard this big loud noise that sounded like water shooting into the air." she said, "I started freaking out because I had no idea what it was."

The incident reportedly happened after a power interruption at the ATCO pipelines facility, which reportedly caused an increase in pressure in the system.

The increase in pressure triggered a release in the safety valve, which caused a loud noise.

A spokesperson from Edmonton Fire Rescue says leak was contained by 8:30 pm.

The leak occurred on the D.S. MacKenzie School grounds.

The noise from the leak can be heard in this YouTube video:
