Julie Matthews
Edmonton's Trouble Shooter
Julie Matthews is Edmonton's Trouble Shooter, one of the busiest and hardest working people at Global Edmonton. She helps you protect your hard-earned money so you don't get ripped off, and informs you of the latest scams and consumer recalls.
Julie grew up on an acreage near Bruderheim and happily calls Alberta home. She began her broadcasting career at CKSA in Lloydminster gaining a lot of experience as a radio and television news reporter, before taking over the 6.00 & 11.00 PM television anchor chair. After four years in Lloydminster, Julie moved to Lethbridge to report and anchor at CFCN Television.
Two years later, the warm weather and scenery of the Okanagan tempted her to take a posting with Global Edmonton's sister station in Kelowna, CHBC, where she became the bureau chief/reporter of the new office in Penticton. Memorable moments there included covering the Okanagan Mountain Park fire which destroyed many homes, and chasing a suspect from court...through downtown Kelowna and several buildings to get an exclusive interview. While at CHBC, Julie received an honourable mention award for her two part documentary series into life on the front lines with a Forest Fire Attack Crew.
Longing to be closer to her family and her now-husband, Julie jumped at the chance to move to Edmonton in April 2004 to become Global Edmonton's Trouble Shooter, and work for the station she grew up watching.
Julie says being the Trouble Shooter is very rewarding. "Often when people call me, they're frustrated and heartbroken, and often feel they have nowhere else to turn. If I can make a phone call or feature their story and it helps solve their problem and educate others, that is what my job is all about."
The Government of Alberta has recognized Julie several times for her work as Global Edmonton's Trouble Shooter. In March 2010, she received two Consumer Champion Awards from Service Alberta. The Award of Distinction in the media category was for her investigation entitled "Protecting Seniors" which looked into popular scams that target seniors, and the hidden savings banks and insurance companies offer but don't advertise for those over 60. The Award of Merit was for Julie's investigation, "Rental Rights"...an ongoing investigation into tenant rights and concerns at a now condemned Edmonton apartment building. Julie also received a Consumer Champion Award of Distinction in 2006, for her investigation into unscrupulous contractors.
Julie loves being a mom to two adorable and busy boys. In what spare time she has, Julie enjoys running, dancing, catching the latest movie, reading, scrapbooking and travelling. She and her husband are avid snorkelers, and look forward to crossing another exotic destination off their "bucket list".
