Health apps paying off for users

CALGARY- Looking to get fit? Arming yourself with a smartphone could make all the difference.

Many apps have been designed to get people motivated to eat better, exercise and even navigate the health care system.

Calgary nurse Lisa said that she’s on her feet all day long, so when she gets home her motivation to stay fit isn’t high.

“There’ve been days where I’ve come home from work and the last thing I’ve wanted to do was workout,” she says.

So, she downloaded apps like Gympact, which puts money on the line.

“Gympact is a monetary motivation so if I don't show up for my workout I have to pay money,” she explained. “If I make my workout than at the end of the week I receive money based on other people that didn't make their workout.”

The Running Room also has a free one with everything needed to meet your training goals.

“If you're about to run a race you can take a look at what you should be running after several kilometers,” explained Shelley Beaubien from the Running Room. “It also helps you with your calculators of calories BMI, your training distance… everything like that to get you set on your training.”

Alberta Health Services jumped on board with a free app that provides up-to-date wait times in urgent care centres in Edmonton and Calgary.

They plan to expand it to include ER wait times for hospitals in Red Deer, Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.
