A 23-year-old man is dead following a head-on collision near Wetaskiwin.

Police say two vehicles collided head-on around 5:15 Thursday evening, on Secondary Highway 814 and Twp 472, just north of Wetaskiwin.

RCMP say the jaws of life were used to remove a 30-year-old Wetaskiwin man from his vehicle. He was taken to the University of Alberta hospital with serious injuries.

The 23-year-old man in the other vehicle, who officers say is from Millet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Weather conditions were poor at the time of the collision, with snow and rain falling. Police say the highway was also wet and slippery at the time.

A RCMP collision reconstruction team was called to the scene to determine the cause of the collision.

While the cause is still under investigation, police say alcohol was not a factor.

The name of victim has not been released.
