EDMONTON - The Global 1 helicopter captured and helped bring an end to a police pursuit that began just after 8 Sunday morning.
The chase started around Calgary Trail and 50th Avenue when a driver refused to pull over, instead running through stop signs and then picking up speed as she made her way through the residential streets.
At one point two police cruisers were following the truck, but the woman behind the wheel managed to lose them. She ended up pulling into a parking lot just off 76th Avenue north of Strathcona High School and west of Calgary Trail, where she left the truck and went into a nearby parked van.
Police arrived shortly after, but didn't know where the suspect had gone so they brought out their sniffer dog. The canine wasn't having much luck picking up a scent, though.
As our helicopter hovered over the scene, Global Edmonton producer Caley Ramsay, who was communicating with Chris Hayden in the chopper, called police communications to let them know where the person they were looking for was hiding.
Police tell us our chopper "played an integral part in the apprehension of the suspect."
The take down was broadcast live from Global 1 to our Sunday Morning News viewers. You can watch the full video of the entire incident below:
A 26 year old woman is now facing several charges including theft of a vehicle, criminal flight, dangerous operation of a vehicle and several breaches of conditions.
As Chris Hayden said in the chopper: "This is what it's about - catching bad guys."
