Four people from Edmonton, two of them young children, en route to California died in a crash in B.C.
The family were heading south on Highway 5 north of Barriere, B.C. Wednesday night when their SUV went out of control and slid across the highway into the path of an oncoming tractor trailer.
Barriere is about 65 kilometers north of Kamloops
A 47 year old man, 37 year old woman, a 7 year old boy and 3 year old girl died in the crash.
In a news release from RCMP, Staff Sgt. Steve Frayne says “Road conditions at the time of the accident were icy and typical for this time of year in this area. It is a devatating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for the winter conditions.”
RCMP also say the SUV was not equipped with winter tires, but with all-season radials instead. Police say it is illegal to not have winter rated tires when driving on B.C. Interior highways.
Names of the victims have not been released. The driver of the tractor trailer suffered minor injuries.
