CALGARY - Education Minister Thomas Lukaszuk has pulled Bill 18, the new Education Act, from the fall session of the legislature.
Despite three years of consultation through the Inspiring Education process, Lukaszuk said he wants broader input that would include students and opposition MLAs.
“I want to make sure we get this right,” said Lukaszuk during a news conference in Edmonton this morning.
He plans to table the bill in the spring, and feels he can get it in and passed before an election call expected early in the new year.
Former education minister Dave Hancock led the process to open and revise the Education Act which then passed first reading in the legislature last spring.
Lukaszuk called that version of the bill a “first draft” that needs work to figure out how to implement the provisions.
The minister said he would announce the stakeholders to be involved in the new consultation process in the coming weeks.
More to come ...
