A city administration report asking for a change to Edmonton's Animal Control Bylaw was accepted on Tuesday.
The report recommends the definition of a "restricted" dog no longer include particular breeds, but rather, dogs who have a history of aggression - regardless of the breed.
Currently, the legislation places restrictions and conditions on owners of American and Bull Staffordshire terrier breeds, also known as pit bulls.
It's welcome news for the Humane Society.
"Every dog is an individual," says Bilinda Wagner of the Edmonton Humane Society. "And as I stipulated in council today, was that there are ten things that make up personality. It's not just an aggressive gene, it's not just a breed, it's not just a look of a dog. Every dog learns what people teach it. Simple as that."
The report will now go to city council for final approval. The recommendation will be heard on October 17th.
