ST. PAUL, Alta. - The family of a man who was charged after a minivan crashed into a school classroom in Alberta says he had been having seizures for several months.
Ralph Benson says his brother, Richard, was on prescribed medication and sometimes smoked marijuana to alleviate pain from ongoing health problems.
He says his brother was the victim of a severe beating more than a decade ago that put him in a coma and left him with a metal plate in his head.
He says his brother had just dropped his two children off at school before the crash Thursday morning.
The van crashed through a window and dove into a Grade 6 classroom at Racette Junior High School in St. Paul and three girls were seriously injured.
RCMP have charged Richard Edward Benson with dangerous driving causing bodily harm, resisting arrest and possession of a controlled substance.
