A new recreation centre planned for northeast Edmonton is a dream come true for thousands of people.

For years residents have turned to the Abbottsfield Recreation Centre. The facility is in a former school, but it's not actually a permanent structure. Its a mix of portable buildings, with a quonset hut for the gym space.

A council committee has approved a new 5.5-Million dollar building for the site, and the volunteer board is excited about the plans.

"It's 1.5 times the size of current facility, with larger gym with diving wall, so two programs can run at the same time, a larger kitchen, almost every program that runs here has food attached to it." said Colleen Fidler of the Abbotsfield Recreation Centre Society. " There will be a teen lounge, seniors lounge, larger preschool, office space, nice and bright and shiny and new."

City council still has to give the okay for the centre to move forward.

The centre serves about 40,000 people a year.
