Capital Region's largest outpatient clinic opens thanks to $30M donation from Edmonton philanthropist

EDMONTON - The Edmonton area’s largest outpatient clinic will officially open Monday with the help of the single largest one-time donation to health care in Alberta’s history.

The Kaye Edmonton Clinic has been named after Edmonton philanthropist Donald Kaye, who donated $30 million to the University Hospital Foundation in support of it. Among other facilities, it will house day surgery clinics, the Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic, the University of Alberta’s School of Dentistry, seniors clinics, diagnostic imaging facilities with a CT scanner and MRI, as well as the northern Alberta Urology Centre and Renal Program.

The $484-million, 62,300-square-metre building will be connected via above-ground pedways to the Edmonton Clinic Health Academy to the north on 87th Avenue.

The academy opened January 2012 as an education and training building where nurses, dietitians, occupational therapists, dentists and pediatricians practise team care in simulated doctors’ offices equipped with mannequins and cameras.

Premier Alison Redford and Health Minister Fred Horne spoke at the official opening of the Kaye Edmonton Clinic. Together with the educational building, the clinic has been called “Mayo North” since patients can go to one centre and have various appointments the same day.

“This unique clinic will improve patient care by creating seamless access to services and specialists,” said Redford in a news release. “Albertans will get the care they need, when they need it.”

More than 400,000 patients are expected to move through the facility in the first year, with nearly one million expected in future years.
