LEDUC- Two teen boys who pled guilty to assaulting an 11-year-old boy more than one year ago were sentenced in a Leduc courtroom Friday.
In December 2012, the boys pled guilty to the attack, which happened at a Calmar home in October 2011.
Court heard the 11-year-old victim had been watching television with one of the youths in his Calmar home, when the accused pulled out a bottle of vodka and threatened to hurt the victim if he didn't drink.
The boy complied, downing as many as 12 shots of vodka, but he was still assaulted and burned with a lighter.
The second teen arrived at the home later in the evening, and the two teens shaved part of the boy's head. Both of the accused then left the room and the boy was able to escape to a nearby gas station.
After hearing one of the accused played a larger role in the assault, on Friday he was sentenced to one year probation and 75 hours of community service. The other youth was sentenced to eight months probation and 30 hours of community service. Both teens are also required to write a letter of apology to the victim.
Reports done for the court state both of the youths had difficult childhoods and both have been doing better since the incident in October 2011.
"By making a sentence of probation, I am not minimizing the horrible things that were done. Rather, I'm acknowledging you've made huge headway," Judge Michael Savaryn told court Friday.
