Alberta couple celebrates 8 decades together

A Lamont couple celebrated a huge milestone on Saturday - one that only two other Canadian couples have ever reached: their 80th anniversary.

The big day, which even had the Queen and Governor General sending their congratulations, was commemorated by five generations of family, all in one room.

Over the past 80 years, Raymond and Norma Sheers, 100 and 99 years old respectively, have grown quite the family tree.

"Don't ask me how many we have, I should have counted the grandchildren," Norma says.

With four kids, 16 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren, it's not surprising that it's hard for her to keep track.

But Norma does remember the night she met her future husband at Brookville's school masquerade dance like it was yesterday, just as she does her snowy wedding day.

"The weather was terrible, the roads were blocked," Norma recalls.

The couple has weathered the storms, though, and is now able to share a few secrets to a long and happy marriage:

"I guess mind your own business," says Raymond, his sense of humour still intact.

Their proud son, Orville, says "hard work and being very true to each other, I think has had a lot to do with it."

"We never argued, we never went to bed mad neither," claims his wife - something their eldest grandson, Darrell, can attest to.

"I can honestly say I've ever seen them argue in 80 years. Well the 54 years that I've been around, I cannot remember ever seeing them argue."

He adds that he also can't remember his grandparents ever being separated for any length of time. "They're always doing things together, they're both active in the community."

"It's not something that happens very often for someone to live that long or be married that long, so we're proud and overjoyed that they did make it to their 80th."
