EDMONTON - Holiday spirit isn't the only thing circulating in the Edmonton area, an outbreak of Norovirus has also hit the region, and Alberta Health Services is encouraging residents to take precautions.

The viral infection usually lasts between 48 and 72 hours, and includes symptoms such as vomiting and/or diarrhea and may include muscle aches and low-grade fever.

Cases of Norovirus have been reported through the region since the beginning of November, and doctors warn that although infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems are most at risk, the general population should take extra care as a result of the holiday season.

"Anyone who is ill, or suspects they might be ill, should stay home from work, refrain from visiting loved ones in seniors' residences and other facilities, and refrain from preparing food for others. Children who are experiencing GI symptoms should also stay home from school or daycare," Dr. Christopher Sikora, Edmonton Zone Medical Officer of Health says. "In addition, if anyone in your household is ill with Norovirus-like symptoms, please do not visit hospitals or care residences, even if you are feeling well."

Norovirus, like other gastro-intestinal illnesses spreads easily through contact with an infected person. AHS has released a list of tips to help people avoid getting sick:

  • Always wash your hands after using the bathroom; after providing care to an ill person; after handling soiled laundry; and before handling food.
  • Individuals experiencing vomiting and/or diarrhea should NOT:
  • Attend schools, child care facilities or social gatherings.
  • Attend work.
  • Visit seniors' residences, continuing care facilities or hospitals.
  • Prepare food for others.

In most cases, Norovirus requires no special treatment. For more information, call Health Link Alberta toll-free at 1-866-408-LINK (5465).
