EDMONTON - A 28-year-old man faces numerous charges after “aggravated assaults” took place at a southwest Edmonton home last week, police said Tuesday.

A woman is alleged to have been injured during an altercation in the area of 108th Street and 85th Avenue over the course of Friday and Saturday. She went to neighbour Kimmie Fournier’s house Sunday morning, asking to use the telephone.

Police have identified the victim as Marie Sapp, 51.

Fournier described her as having a number of facial injuries, including swelling, cuts and bruises, but said she was still conscious and appeared to be OK.

Sapp died that night in hospital. An autopsy could not determine a cause, pending toxicology results, and police said Tuesday her death is not considered a homicide at this time.

Another man is also alleged to have been assaulted at the same residence Saturday. He was treated in hospital for injuries police describe as serious.

Shawn Adriane Northwest has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, and one count of uttering death threats.

Police are expected to speak to the media about the case this afternoon.
