A woman in her late 20s is dead after she was hit by a transit bus in downtown Edmonton at about 6:50 a.m. Wednesday.
The woman was on her way to work at the time, said Clair Seyler, spokeswoman for the Edmonton Police Service.
She was crossing the street at a crosswalk at 102A Avenue and 97th Street when she was hit by the bus, police said.
The intersection is just south of the Edmonton Law Courts building.
Police could not confirm in which direction the woman was crossing the street.
Police believe the bus had a green light.
The Route 1 bus was travelling westbound, turning left from 102A Avenue into the southbound lane of 97th Street when it hit the woman.
The woman was trapped under the bus. Fire rescue crews were called to the scene to remove her.
The woman was transported from the scene to hospital and died as a result of her injuries.
Police could not confirm at this time how experienced the driver of the bus was.
“I believe he is very devastated by this,” said Seyler.
She said he has been offered counselling services.
On Wednesday morning, a number of wooden blocks were jammed underneath the empty bus, along with some broken pieces of wood also behind it.
A long trail of blood was visible in front of the bus, which was parked diagonally across 97th Street.
Police have blocked off streets surrounding the scene, and anticipate roads will be closed for three to four hours.
The name of the woman will not be released until family is notified, Seyler said.
No charges have been laid, and police continue to investigate the accident.
