The Global Newsroom has come up with a list of some less heard snow survival tips. If you have any to add, please leave them in the comments below.

  • Tips for your home
  • - Clear snow away from furance vents. If it becomes covered, your furnace could shut down.
  • - Clear snow away from dryer vents. If the vent is blocked, it can cause heat and gase to build up in your home.
  • - Run paddle ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise when looking up) to circulate warm air in your home.
  • - To prevent frozen pipes, open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors. That allows warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Also, letting cold water drip from the faucet of an exposed pipe helps prevent the pipe from freezing. You can also use a hair dryer, heat lamp, or space heater to thraw frozen pipes that haven't burst.
  • Tips for driving
  • - Clear snow around driverside door before opening to prevent snow from falling into the car and onto your seat.
  • - Leave windshield wipers upright so they don't freeze.
  • - Check your vehicle's exhuast pipes regularly to make sure there isn't buildup of snow.
  • - Keep kitty litter in your car. It can help add traction if your car is stuck.
  • - If your car is stuck, placing car mats under the tires also help the wheels gain traction.
  • - Place a heavy object such as a bag of sand in the trunk of a rear-wheel drive vehicle to help increase traction.
  • - Pouring bleach on your tires can help with traction as well.
  • - Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
  • - If there is a drop in temperature of more than 15 C, check your tire pressure to make sure it hasn't dropped.
  • - Don’t let gas get below half tank otherwise you risk having the water vapour in gas lines freezing.
  • - Hand sanitizer with 60% alcohol put on a key can help de-ice the lock.
  • - Shaving cream apparently has many of the same ingredients that are found in commercial de-foggers so spray on inside of windows and wipe off with paper towel.
  • Other tips
  • - Grocery shop in bulk. Buy enough groceries to last more than a week to avoid unnecessary trips out in the snow. (Submitted by John)
  • - Keep an extra pair of dry socks in the vehicle - just in case. (Submitted by Glenda)
